Arriving in Cappadocia: Where the Story Begins

Our Cappadocia journey began the moment we touched down at Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport. From there, we travelled through a landscape that felt instantly otherworldly — soft volcanic rock, sculpted valleys, and shapes that seemed almost unreal.
We arrived at our cave hotel, carved directly into ancient rock. Warm, atmospheric, and deeply rooted in the region’s history, it was the perfect introduction to Cappadocia. After settling in, we didn’t waste a moment — Cappadocia was calling.
First Impressions: Carpets, Colour & Curiosity
Stepping out into the nearby streets, we were immediately drawn into Cappadocia’s everyday magic. Handmade carpets spilled from balconies and shopfronts, rich with colour, texture, and symbolism. Each piece told a story — of heritage, craftsmanship, and generations of skill passed down through families.
Walking these streets felt like moving through an open-air gallery: warm smiles, lively conversations, and the gentle hum of life unfolding around us.
Quad Biking Through the Fairy Chimneys

That same afternoon, the pace shifted from gentle exploration to pure adventure. We climbed onto quad bikes and headed straight into the valleys, weaving between the fairy chimneys, stopping often, laughing freely, and taking in the surreal beauty up close.
Cappadocia was alive with movement and energy — quad bikes buzzing through the dust, horses gliding through the valleys, vintage cars lined up for photo shoots, and travellers soaking in every moment. This wasn’t a silent, still landscape — it was vibrant, shared, and full of joy.
An Evening of Anticipation
As the sun dipped behind the rock formations, a different emotion set in: anticipation. Our hot air balloon flight was scheduled for the following morning, but in Cappadocia, everything depends on the weather.
That night, excitement mixed with quiet hope. This balloon flight was one of the reasons we had travelled to Türkiye, and all we could do was wait for the early-morning confirmation.
Sunrise Magic: Floating Above Cappadocia

Before sunrise, the message came — we were cleared to fly. Relief turned instantly into awe as we watched dozens of balloons inflate and rise into the soft morning light.
Floating above the valleys, fairy chimneys, and winding paths below was calm, majestic, and deeply moving. The quiet — broken only by the occasional burst of flame — made the experience feel almost sacred. It was one of those moments that stays with you long after you return home.
Beneath the Surface: Underground Cities & Ancient Faith
After the balloon flight, we explored Cappadocia’s remarkable depth — both physically and historically. Descending into the underground cities of Derinkuyu and Kaymakli, we stood in awe of how entire communities once lived beneath the earth — organised, resilient, and protected.
Above ground, we visited Pasabag, famous for its mushroom-shaped chimneys, and wandered through the hauntingly beautiful ruins of Zelve Monastery, where faith and daily life were
Avanos: Clay, Craft & Living Tradition
Our journey continued to Avanos, a town renowned for its pottery traditions dating back to the Hittite period. Here, clay from the Red River is still shaped by hand, just as it has been for thousands of years.
Watching local artisans at work — and taking part in a pottery workshop ourselves — connected us deeply to Cappadocia’s living heritage. Along the way, we encountered ancient caravanserais once used by Silk Road traders, now beautifully restored as eateries and accommodation. In Cappadocia, history isn’t locked behind glass — it’s lived.
Why This Cappadocia Journey Mattered
From landing in Nevşehir and settling into our cave hotel, to wandering carpet-lined streets, riding quads through the valleys, waiting in hopeful anticipation for the balloon flight, and exploring both the depths and traditions of Cappadocia — every moment unfolded naturally and meaningfully.
This was Cappadocia face to face — layered, soulful, joyful, and unforgettable.
