Şirince – The Little Hill Village that captures every heart

A Hidden Gem Near Ephesus in Türkiye

Hidden in the green hills just outside Ephesus, lies one of Türkiye’s most charming villages — Şirince.

At first glance, Şirince feels like a postcard brought to life. Red-tiled roofs tumble down the slopes, narrow cobbled lanes wind between whitewashed wooden houses, and the air carries the gentle scent of fruit, Turkish coffee, and warm stone.

It’s no surprise that Şirince has become a favourite stop for travellers exploring the Ephesus region — and especially for our Face 2 Face ladies seeking slow, meaningful travel experiences in Türkiye.

From Ancient Roots to a New Name

Şirince’s history stretches back thousands of years and is closely linked to nearby Ephesus, one of the most significant ancient cities of the Roman world.

During Byzantine times, the village was settled primarily by Greek Orthodox families. Interestingly, it was originally called Çirkince, meaning “ugly” in Turkish. The name was intentionally chosen to discourage outsiders from settling there, protecting the village’s peaceful way of life.

Ironically, visitors who discovered the village found it anything but ugly.

In the early 20th century, the name was officially changed to Şirince, meaning “pleasant,” “pretty,” or “charming.” A more fitting name would be hard to imagine.

Traditional Ottoman Architecture Built Into the Hills

The village is built on steep slopes, with traditional Ottoman-era wooden houses positioned so that none blocks the view of another — a thoughtful design reflecting community harmony. Stone foundations anchor the homes to the hillside, while upper floors extend gently over narrow streets, creating shaded walkways and intimate corners.

Historically, winding paths and mule tracks connected Şirince to nearby towns like Selçuk and Ephesus. Villagers would travel down to trade olives, figs, grapes, and handcrafted goods, returning home with supplies — and stories.

Even today, the layout of the village reflects a strong sense of community: neighbours close, doors open, life shared.

The Famous Fruit Wines of Şirince

Şirince is especially famous for one delightful tradition: fruit wine.

For generations, local families have produced small-batch wines using fruits grown in the surrounding valleys and orchards. While grape wine is available, the real charm lies in the variety of fruit flavours, including:

  • Pomegranate
  • Cherry
  • Blackberry
  • Peach
  • Quince
  • Mulberry
  • Fig

These wines are light, fragrant, and playful — perfect for tasting on a sunny terrace overlooking the hills.

Wine boutiques line the cobbled lanes, inviting visitors to sample, compare, and often leave with a carefully wrapped bottle or two as a memory of their time in Şirince. It’s usually here that laughter becomes louder, conversations grow longer, and shopping baskets become fuller.

A Favourite Stop on Our Face 2 Face Türkiye Tours

There is something about Şirince that speaks directly to the heart.

Perhaps it’s the quaint guesthouses — many converted from historic homes — where balconies overlook tiled rooftops and mornings begin with birdsong and traditional Turkish breakfast.

Or the little coffee shops, where strong Turkish coffee is served slowly, accompanied by homemade cake and unhurried conversation.

Or the craft stores and boutique shops filled with lace, ceramics, olive oil soaps, scarves, jewellery, and handmade treasures — perfect keepsakes from your Turkish journey.

Our Face 2 Face ladies consistently fall in love with this village.

They wander slowly.
They photograph endlessly.
They taste generously.
They linger longer than planned.

Şirince has a way of softening time.

Why Şirince Should Be on Your Türkiye Travel Itinerary

What makes Şirince truly special is not only its beauty, history, or flavours — but its feeling.

It welcomes without rushing.
It charms without showing off.
It invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and simply enjoy where you are.

In a journey filled with ancient ruins, grand historical sites, and bustling bazaars, Şirince becomes a gentle pause — a moment of calm, laughter, and connection.

For many of our travellers exploring Ephesus and the Izmir region, it becomes one of the most treasured memories of their Turkish adventure.
